As Will Ferrell’s character, Ron Burgundy, said in the movie Anchorman, Michael Schwartz is kind of a big deal.  Down in Miami, Schwartz runs an impressive restaurant empire including his flagship Michael’s Genuine Food and Drink, which won the James Beard Award in 2010 for Best Restaurant in the South.

Schwartz has picked Atlanta and Phipps Plaza in Buckhead as his first venture outside of the Sunshine State and brings us Genuine Pizza, a super approachable Italian joint that offers gourmet Neapolitan-style pies with toppings like short rib and gruyere, meatball with peppers and onions, slow-roasted pork and fig and rock shrimp with fresh manchego.  There are fresh salads like warm brussels sprouts and burrata, and some simple entrees like roasted eggplant, pan seared Mahi and pan-roasted skirt steak.  Beer, wine and rich Italian coffees will wash down all the goodness.

These are simple renditions of Italian classics but it’s not difficult to see that a master was at hand in concocting the recipes and developing the approach for preparation.    And with the most expensive item on the menu coming in at a whopping $21, it’s very un-Buckhead price-wise.
