Interesting story:  Giulio Adriani was a native Roman who crunched numbers as an accountant for a living when he decided that what really made him happy was making pizza.  So he first studied under his grandmother, an honest to goodness Neapolitan pizza maker, then under a couple of world-renowned pizza chefs.  He got promoted to Master instructor for one of the most revered pizza associations in Naples and actually used to be the guy that would fly into places to certify them as serving authentic Neapolitan pizzas.  He won the Gold Medal at the Pizza Championship in Salsomaggiore, Italy in 2010 and actually holds the Guinness World Record for the longest pizza stretching 1.3 miles long.  To top it off, his signature pizza, the Montanara, with its flash-fried crust, was so unusual and addictive that it was credited for the reason his Green Card was approved.  So, yeah, the dude has some mad skills and credentials.

And now, believe it or not, he’s making pies over in Midtown West at the Local Pizzaiolo and has plans to open 3 more in the city this year.  The Local Pizzaiolo, which means "pizza maker," serves up outstanding pies—the kind that at some places in town now command a $20+ price tag-- at a fast-casual price.  Classics like the Margherita and the marinara as well as signature pies like the Dante’s Kiss made with spicy soppressata and Calabrian peppers, the Mona Lizza with soft salami, ricotta and hot honey and my favorite, The Local, a pie that brings the fabled Heirloom Market BBQ miso-marinated brisket into the mix along with aged provolone, cippolini onions and smoked hot honey.  This is one of the most flavor-explosive and savory pizzas I have ever tasted.  There are salads and gelato along with beer, wine, and a few cocktails.  And there’s even a little market to boot.

Sure, purists might sniff that this isn’t hardcore Neapolitan style pizza but you are going to have a hard time complaining about the quality, the infectious energy of the place and most of all, the price.  With fast-casual restaurants surging, the Local Pizzaiolo might have nailed the formula of bringing an artisan pizza to the masses.
